Are these https://gamefabrique.com/games/quake/ games free and legal? There are *.exe installers. What are they? Trial? I can imagine that https://gamefabrique.com/games/doom-64/ is free and legal, but Quake-2? Is it? Also I found this https://romsplanet.com are they legal and free?

>>505033 >It's legal to download and play roms for up to 24 hours to try before you buy No, it's not, that's just a myth. There is no such law that allows you to pirate something for 24 hours.
>>505033 >It's legal to download and play roms for up to 24 hours to try before you buy so just write a script that deletes and redownloads your roms every 23 hours and you're good. Who came up with this retarded myth? Did ROM sites make it up so people would come and revisit them every day to boost the site's popularity? You would think a ROM site of all places would want as little publicity as possible. No, downloading ROMs for games you don't own is always illegal, and in some places it's is illegal regardless of whether you own the original game or not. Of course no one here gives a shit, and even Nintendo or Sega don't give a shit if you download a few old NES or Master System ROMs, but it's still technically not legal. >>504985 >ROM games are more safe as I understand, right? A ROM will not be executed directly by your operating system. It contains executable code, but it has no access to your file system or other operating system facilities, so it's like opening an image file. With that said in theory it would be possible that an emulator as a security flaw that a ROM could exploit to do something malicious, but the same is true for any application that can open files. I have never heard of such an exploit ever existing though, and in practice that would require a chain of very unlikely vulnerabilities to pull off. A hacker would have better luck just sending out random Nigerian Prince emails and hoping someone bites. >Malware maybe only in the emulator, yes? Correct. The emulator runs directly on your operating system and has the same access to it as any other application. Download emulators (an any other software for that matter) from their official website or build from source yourself. >>504590 >A well funded legal team and the fact they make no money off it. That has to be quite a legal team. I'm not complaining, just the other day I had trouble reading one of my old game CDs, so I just hopped over to Archive.org and downloaded an ISO instead.

China suspends Tencent from updating existing apps or launching new apps -report Anonymous 11/24/2021 (Wed) 16:15:48 Id: f38619 No. 476059 [Reply] [Last]
https://archive.md/Kf8lE >China has suspended Tencent Holdings from updating its existing apps or launching any new apps as part of a “temporary administrative guidance” against the tech giant, Chinese media outlets including Shanghai-based Chinastarmarket.cn, reported. >According to the report, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has told app stores and platforms to implement the order against Tencent apps from Wednesday in a harsh administrative punishment against the tech giant, which runs dozens of apps including the super app WeChat that has 1.2 billion users. >Tencent said in a statement that it is cooperating with the authorities on inspecting its apps, indirectly confirming the report. As far as I can tell, there's been no reason given for this. It came out of nowhere. As said in the article: >It is not known how long the suspension will last and the Chinese ministry has not published any information about the ban.

>>478331 >A mere countess >Hardly an imperial match That is exactly the problem. The Hapsburg imperium was at the time of the worlds super powers(using modern terminology). A heir to that would always struggle to find a suitable match. At some point they would have to "marry down" regardless. Besides considering the rampant incest within the Hapsburg bloodline it was simply a matter of practicality to marry someone entirely separate from it, which again considering how wide spread the Hapsburgs were at that point complicated the whole thing even further. >serbians shouldn't have murdered an imperial heir >accepted the natural punishment of annexation My dude the assassination happened because the Serbs were fed up with the Hapsburg empire and wanted out. Them accepting annexation was the very last thing they would accept. War was the only possible outcome and considering all the "defense agreements" the powers of the time had there was literary 0 chance that it would not boil over into a world war. This shit was known and boiling in that region for several decades if not centuries and it was hardly specific to it. Similar shit was happening all around the Austro-Hungarian empire and if it did not happen in Serbia it would have happened in Hungary or Poland or Czechia anywhere else. It was a bad situation the Franz simply failed to factor into his decision making process and as a result caused two world wars because he could not accept that marrying upwards is not eternally possible for his at that point incestuous bloodline.
>>478338 >China's fucking up again >As usual This is actually how it been in China though out its entire history. They were poised to become the worlds super power as early as medieval times and almost always internally self destructed.

Remakes thread Anonymous 10/21/2021 (Thu) 20:47:45 Id: 4b9e17 No. 447912 [Reply] [Last]
ITT: Discuss any vidya remakes that you hated. Or any that you liked. I'll start with Link's Awakening. It's mostly a good remake. Mostly. It had a few QoL improvements that make it a better gameplay experience than the original game. You now don't have to constantly re-equip the Power Bracelet everytime you wanna pick up heavy objects like rocks. An annoying flaw that the gameboy LA had. The remake also made Manbo's song actually useful. It now lets you warp to more places and traverse the island quickly. I hated that the overworld has this noticeable blurry filter. The environment looks really fuzzy and it's an eyesore to look at. The remake also lost some charm because it removed the photo sidequest that Link's Awakening DX had. No more funny pictures to collect. And personally, I don't like how Link himself looks in the beady eye Earthbound artstyle. Every other character in the game looks fine imo. But I still find Link's design a little creepy whenever he stares at the screen with those soulless eyes.

All I want are upscalled visuals (NOT REDONE ONES) and if possible some quality of life additions that do not alter a games difficulty. To many devs fuck with a games original vision.

>>449478 >Imagine how much detailed it could have been with pre-rendered 4K backgrounds remade from the original and dynamic lighting instead of shitty-ass RE4 copy and real-time shit That's how REmake2 should have been >I hate REmake 2 so much, especially when REmake 1 did everything right. Same here, but Crapcom's executives are retarded "games must all play the same and be either first person or over-the-shoulder, otherwise people won't buy them!" (The re-release of REmake sell like crazy) "Oh, so people do like the old school fixed camera style!? Let's keep going with the over-the-shoulder regardless..."
>>502972 I beat it, and I think I'll redact this post; it's alright. It's weird to have a remake of a game that people are as passionate about as FFVII evoke a middling or lukewarm reaction. You'd think it's a love-it-or-hate-it thing but it's a 7.5-8.0, probably 8 for presentation. Some things are clever, some expansions are welcome, others are baffling and wat-inducing. Still kept me hooked for a solid playthrough although I found myself dropping off at points hoping it would end soon. Not terrible, not great. Just pretty good with certain points that suck.

Fire Emblem's weird direction and a possible future? Anonymous 03/13/2021 (Sat) 15:47:02 Id: d8e458 No. 258955 [Reply] [Last]
I haven't seen much discussion here or previously about Fire Emblem 3 Houses and its weird, jumbled identity. It's certainly a fascinating case when you take in account the history of Fire Emblem and ignore the localizations, because I think we're seeing a very hard shift in both stories presented in FE and developers. All this is speculation mind you. Old Fire Emblem >Made by nerds who liked 80s and 90s fantasy anime and DnD >Series from 1 up to 10 were about fantasy Europe being the good guys mostly and fighting against dragons, undead and some dark priests mostly >Series jerked off fantasy France mostly >In an ironic twist, they depicted Macedonia as megalomaniacal and later humbled as a nod to Alexander the Great >Big bad was mostly Fantasy Britain but thanks to Alm this stopped >Fantasy Skandinavia got two games and somehow was connected to fantasy Thrace >Fantasy Greece also got two games and was connected to Arthurian / Roland legends fighting against Messopotamian deities and dragons >FE9 and 10 were fantasy Crimean recreating Crimean legends featuring Guts from the Berserk series >The games are loved in Japan, many series exist thanks to Kaga's idea of making Lazer Squad into an RPG as well >Fire Emblem grows by adding Kaga's ideas and by trading ideas with the series that sprouted thanks to them, like SRW <FE11 and 12 were remakes <We all know how uber shit 12 was and how it almost killed the franchise <The less said about Kris the better

Anyone up to anything fun and FE-related? There's supposedly been a leak that the next game will be an Echoes-style remake speculated by some to be PoR/RD, but it could be others too. https://vid.puffyan.us/watch?v=_CJ7-Xd-P-w
>>503248 >Ike duology remake I honestly wouldn't say no if they did it as a "two in one" bundle and didn't fuck around with it too bad by adding the waifu shit.
>>503273 No. None of the games in this series should be lumped together in a fucking remake, you mongoloid. Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn are very different games. FE4 and FE5 do not need to be one game. FE6 and FE7 do not need to be one game.

If you're going to spend the entire day online anon, might as well get in here. Good memories, good tunes, what more can a man ask for? What are ya playing now or got done playing? What are your thoughts? Anything goes. >News The 25th anniversary of Persona is coming up and Atlus is teasing 7 announcements from Fall 2021 to Fall 2022. Quite a ways away, my guess is they'll announce the next game as the last announcement in 2022. It is worth noting that the director of Persona 3-5 left after 5. Also, don't forget that Atlus West localizers have repeatedly shit on the original games and 'fixed' them like they did Catherine: Full Body and some scenes in P5. If there is a game, expect it to be complete shit. https://archive.is/3J8fz DeepL: >In 2021, the Persona series will have sold over 15 million units worldwide. >I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to all of you who have watched over and supported us over the years. >In September, the Persona series will finally celebrate its 25th anniversary. >To express our gratitude to all of you, we will be celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Persona series for one year from this September 2021 to next fall 2022. >PERSONA 25th Anniversary YEAR, we are preparing a lot of fun. >We'll be announcing a variety of 25th Anniversary items, events, collaborations, and of course, game information. >We'll be announcing a variety of special events, collaborations, and of course, game information. >Please stay tuned.

Tactics Games Anonymous 03/13/2021 (Sat) 23:23:23 Id: 82cdb3 No. 259156 [Reply] [Last]
Because I don't want to keep teasing the anons in the big Fire Emblem thread about their game not being very complex. So let's talk about one of the best genres that goes hand in hand with autism. Doesn't matter if it's turnbased or real time. It can be as easy to get into as Fire Emblem and Shining Force or extreme autism territory like Advanced Tactics Gold. Let's get the ball rolling. What do you anons think about XCom 2013 and XCom2? I enjoy them, despite their meme hit chances. Some people call the ability system a meme, but that's why I like it and games like Disgaea. However, I think the developers dropped the ball real hard with XCom 2, and it's all because of one simple reason. In a game where a loss can be a major setback, so you want to play it slowly with a lot of planning and thinking, they decided to add a time limit to most missions.

Artwork and concept is interdasting, but if only it had come out 3-4 years ago instead. All the LEs are sold out already, I guess they were too appealing.

Happy thanksgiving fags, did you remember to thank your neps and do your best for them? Right now there's a big sale on Iffy's store if fags are interested in any games or merch, I recommend checking it out if you're interested, though things are getting sold out pretty quickly. There's also a sizable sale going on for a week on the (((Steam))) and Switch eShop for a lot of IFI games if you're a fag that buys digital
Continuing Nep Re;Birth 2 Still not as good as 1 but they're finally introducing more characters at least, even if everything is all around worse than 1's, its not bad, just a shame that they couldn't live up to 1. Feels like chapter 2 took forever in general though Game is still piss-easy overall. Still impressed by the models of the new characters like Red and now Cave, her model is also great too. What an ass, such good thighs too, plus the sheen on her legs just makes using her EXE drive so good. The lack of budget really shows in this game unfortunately. The fact that there was never any singing by 5pb during those cutscenes where singing was implied made it look silly, same for a lot of events like that where things basically just get solved by silent "offscreen magic", it felt really lame. Writing is not bad though, the fact that the leanbox bimbo thought a boy band would be a good idea to an all-male crowd, and the whole crowd going AJ styles on them was amusing as fuck. Dialogue could be a bit punchier but I think that's mainly to do with the characters. The characters in this one feel... I don't know the word for it. Toned down? Sober? Also I hate Falcom's new redesign, looks too boyish for my taste. Lloyd's jacket or whatever looks awful on her compared to the old design, same with her hairstyle. At least she still has a glorious navel, but still its just so... blech. Her estelle+Ys inspired design in 1 was so good. The reference to idolm@ster not being exclusive anymore was amusing and slightly sad to see, topkek, poor leanbox can't catch a break We'll see how things go, I'm surprised it took me so long to get to this point, the bosses and shit are still much easier than 1 thus far, overall its alright

Luigi bounding into frame, landing both feet perfectly on this guys head and goomb-curbstomping his skull open is still one of the funniest things I've ever seen on the internet.
>>502496 The best part is his expression as he does it. Not anger or even satisfaction, just a tiny hint of something resembling perhaps a grimace, as he looks away, not wanting to actually witness what he is doing. But he looks to the sky, upward, knowing that he is moving forward and that this needed to be done. How this contrasts with Mario's expression in the first panel you posted makes it even better. And when you get the whole context of the story, it all makes sense. Lazerbot is sincerely one of the most expressive artists I've ever seen, and when people laugh at it, they might not even realize it, but they are laughing with him, not at him. They are laughing because he is exceptionally skilled.

What would a GOOD remake/enhanced port of a game change about a particular game? Anonymous 11/28/2021 (Sun) 07:28:56 Id: d5fc92 No. 479349 [Reply] [Last]
Video game remakes, especially modern ones, tend to suck and have no idea what made the original game good and making random changes while the additions are relatively pointless. What games do you think could actually benefit from a remake with relatively minor changes? Hard Mode: Not just modern interface/controls and actually working on modern machines. Baten Kaitos >Nipponese VA by default and no distorted audio in stereo >time based magus changes longer than a 5 hours are based on real time instead of game time >lower the number of missable items, especially on disc one >add the wing dash and instant ladders from the sequel >improve the element variety of Lyude and Sylvana's magus so they're not stuck with two contradictory elements >buff non-weapon magus so they're more than novelties Breath of Fire II >new translation (duh) >add the dragon gene system found in III because BoF2 Ryu is super boring >this also allows adds more stuff to fill out all the empty sections in dungeons >make shamans obtainable earlier so the system matters before just the final few dungeons >make the solo sten segment less of a hell if he's not leveled up when you enter it >make Patty join the party when you reach the final dungeon

They fucking changed it? I remember years ago when bitching about shadowbanning across various sites happened, not necessarily at the start of GG, a little before, that it worked like twitter's and later even youtubers noted that by winter of 2015 or something. >Trending pages literally exist across all social media as well. What is the deal with Overwatch Anonymous 12/01/2021 (Wed) 13:58:13 Id: b4b15e No. 482104 [Reply] [Last]
Considering the recent development around Blizzard I think its pretty safe to assume Overwatch is pretty much done as an IP. I don't think there is much to discuss there to begin with but what I always wondered, since I only played much later after release, what even made it popular in the first place. I mean realistically outside of porn and somewhat nice looking visuals it was always at best a mediocre shooter. Mainly because of the hardcounter system where some characters are hard counters to others the game never could be properly balanced. It always had to be broken on some level, at least not without a major redesign. So I wonder was it just Tracers ass that made it popular or was there at some point something more to the game when it started?

Open software distribution is always a positive for the consumer. >The reasons some software are exclusive are not artificial, or rather, they are not artificial compared to any other gaming platform besides PC (specifically running Linux) And all the same criticisms apply to all of those platforms too. But less so for Windows considering at this point directX is essentially full translatable to vulkan with negligible performance loss. >They more or less do it because video games are a competitive market. I'm well aware it results in more hardware sales. Plenty of anti-consumer practices result in more profit. The profit of a company means nothing to me. And no I won't accept a roundabout claim that the more a company profits the more likely they are to support the platform and give you epic products. That is delusional. >You need games on your system to differentiate your system from your competitor. Do you think the Steam Deck needs exclusives to sell? >If the company is funding your game and nobody else is bothering to, obviously they'll keep it exclusive to the platform. How obvious the reasons behind anti-consumer practices are doesn't make them any more palatable. >Video games aren't merely a charity, they are a business in most cases. FOSS software is nice and all, but expecting everyone, let alone businesses and corporations who have an interest in selling their hardware, to follow a model like that is a bit ridiculous when you aren't the only type of customer that exists in the market. I never expected them to. And yet day after day we're seeing Sony "exclusives" start to show up on Steam. It's starting to sound like open standards are conducive to a free and open market and that artificially impeding software commerce negatively affects sales. It might have been idealism 10 years ago but today it seems like the direction games companies will take. Charity has nothing to do with it. Valve doesn't use Linux because of charity, they use it because it's the path of least resistance. Open standards are the path of least resistance. >I am not deriding your values or anything like that, but your actions based on principles like that would just deprive yourself of unique hardware, and by extension games connected to that hardware, rather than stop them from continuing doing what they do. They would deprive supporting practices you disagree with, which is important. Not so much in a second-hand market for a console no longer in manufacturing, but generally speaking. >If a "free" platform can't pay the bills and the game wouldn't be made otherwise, how is it the Vita's fault for just existing as a platform for devs to develop on? And indeed, that's what happened. There's mountains of evidence pointing towards open distribution of software resulting in more profit, not less. If Gravity Rush released for Android today it would probably dwarf its lifetime Vita sales within the year.

>>503468 I personally still disagree with your perspective on exclusivs but continuing the argument doesn't seem like it would yield anything further of value for either of us Regardless if you do end up getting one, hopefully you'll have fun.

Treasure chests Anonymous 12/30/2021 (Thu) 21:20:31 Id: e56925 No. 501927 [Reply]
Any games that puts any real focus on the treasure chests? That is who makes them and who put them in dungeons?

>>502291 >and now if it ever does show up in a game I'll only think about how anons already thought of it. It arguably already did in Final Fantasy 12. Maybe. >>502088 Well Chrono Cross had door mimics in Viper Manor and a single pot mimic/genie. Dragon Quest games on occasion have more than the typical chest mimic. The a fore mentioned FF12 has save point mimics and so did Chrono Trigger in that one dungeon.
>>502311 Don't forget trapdoors in FFIV. >>502088 Roguelikes still have mimics that mimic items. Chests are particularly tempting for a mimic's main source of food: adventurers. Thanks to monster girls, by now the "mimics are chests" meme is pretty deeply entrenched.

"Creating" a competitive community on launch Anonymous 12/28/2021 (Tue) 16:32:25 Id: 395555 No. 500274 [Reply]
I've always found it strange how companies try to "establish" a competitive community while ignoring the fact that the game has to be liked first on its own merits before a competitive. When making sequels games with established competitive communities this is understandable to an extent, as it builds on top of a playerbase that was there before. The thing with the E-spurts scenes is that they have repeatedly shown themselves to be niche and entrenched to their respective games. The ones going "big" or "official" often had to have almost a decade of history and setup made by the community itself before a company stepped in to take the reins. Do they think that casual players follow competitive players along? Do they think that "competitive" players are like whales? Do they think they can make big bux out of the advertising? It's genuinely perplexing to me, as such events cannot be skipped to their good parts through advertising or replicated artificially outside of sheer luck.

>>501184 Outside of Paladin's that tried and I'm not sure if it's failed yet but it's still alive. Overwatch, Lawbreakers, and battleborn all failed in their attempt at the hero shooter genre. Ironic, considering that Paladin's was just another attempt out of many that tried and (technically) made it out alive but it's far from an esports title but it does have a competitive following albeit small as shit compared to others.
>>500363 It's not surprising that, since they're betting that a large proportion of the money they make from a game is going to come from an e-sports competition "scene," they want to control that scene as much as they possibly can. That means they need to be seen as the natural fountainhead for it, so they pretty much have to promote and father it. That embraces things like publishers doing all the server hosting for games, so that when they're ready to make more money they can shut them all down and come out with their new game. You're thinking like a person who likes and plays video games, and not like a person who wants to make a lot of money and has picked video games as the way to do it.

>>502331 Anon I have one word for you - whales. The magical fish that every executive MBA wants to catch. Whether its in mobile gaming, normal gaming, social media, or e-commerce site. You gotta find the whales first and foremost and then milk them and them alone. For a secure financial future. >like a person who wants to make a lot of money and has picked video games as the way to do it. you described every entrepreneur and upper-middle management present
