The GCN will turn 20 this year. The little "mauve" lunchbox was widely considered to have a very limited library, yet just a glance at its library shows it was still vastly better than what consoles have now! This console really was the swan song for Nintendo, fitting as the tagline for the console was who are you and was their identity crisis because third-parties were leaving them to greener pastures and their rivals' consoles not only had DVD playback and online play but also had their games get more coverage than Nintendo titles. In this compilation of interviews Miyamoto goes in depth about the Gamecube. https://archive.is/dqOL6 >GameCube's design is pretty peculiar, different from what we are in the habit to see in a gaming console. First thing we had in mind was the evolution of videogaming itself: the reduced size of the GameCube allows you to carry it form room to room quite easily. Every family has at least two TV-sets at home, and it is very easy to bring the GameCube from the living-room to the sleeping-room, if you want, not to consider a friend's place. We looked for simplicity and practicalness: GameCube wants to be a console that fits all the family, from the youngsters to the elders. It's no surprise the library is fondly remembered since they experimented new concepts with their old games to see what direction they could be taken in, even in the cases like Star Fox Adventures where it didn't really work out. Now as far as the controller is concerned I would like to try it out on some modern games on the PC but it lacks a second Z button on the left side. If anyone knows of a good Gamecube controller that almost has the quality of the official unit but has more buttons added to it suitable for modern games tell me about it. I would look into homebrew for the Gamecube but I have a feeling it's not as robust as the Wii.
I miss Custom Robo and F-Zero.

Best and also my first console ever owned. shut up, i only ever really owned PC gaems at that point Starwars bounty hunter was probably my 2nd favorite singleplayer game next to thousand year door. Sunshine and luigi's mansion was great and i always used to be the shit out of my siblings at mario kart double dash, melee and f-zero. Gamecube was definitly peak gen for nintendo in terms of originality and quality, it's pretty much down hill after that. At the same gen you also had the gameboy advance which was also pretty great with all the games it had.

>>304083 That Hori pad seems decent but it's a little odd that for it being licensed by Nintendo the shoulder buttons aren't analog and it doesn't have rumble. There seems be an earlier Hori Gamecube controller which looks the part of having more buttons but it has the Gamecube controller port instead of USB and I don't know anything about the shoulder triggers or rumble. It's perplexing.
>>304083 I can vouch for the PowerA wireless controllers. They work really well and tend to feel close enough to a gamecube controller. although it feels like a more modern interpretation since the buttons can feel quite different, but not really in a bad way. Biggest difference with PowerA is that the triggers aren't analog so you got no pull action on them. it's just pressed or not pressed. Works great on windows. Although if you decide to use linux for what ever reason the vendor ID for PowerA doesn't match the pro controller so when using Steam to connect and configure it won't work properly. This isn't a problem on windows, just Linux. And it's kind of a real shame.

I liked how the sixth generation still remained plug-and-play, but also tried the new things like ethernet adapters or HDDs that sadly marked the way for the following gens to become glorified PCs. GC had GameBoy player and you could connect your GBA to it, PS2 had a Linux kit...

>>304364 Homebrew called "Gameboy Interface" not only allows booting it without the original disc, but add a bunch of extra features (tas playback, screen shots, rom/save dumping and I think flash card). It has a leg up on emulator for certain purposes because it's actually running on original hardware (GBA emulation is pretty damn good now, but testing and some edge cases exist, plus console verifying TASs).

Though I think the reason why people rather make games for way older hardware is because of the limits and workarounds. The gamecube/ps2/xbox made everything a bit more samey is what I mean.

While the Gamecube had probably the most solid lineup for its generation it also had the most "niche" library. Aside from Smash Bros. everyone I knew wanted to play Halo or Mortal Kombat and very quickly after that the newest shooter that'd recently come out. There was only one friend I had who played Nintendo games but he only had Kirby Air Ride and Metroid Prime 2 and he'd always screenlook when we played it. In the N64 game, there are those stages with the Landmaster—the tank—where the camera automates itself and enemies pour in from the sky, right? <So, you decided to take your Star Fox Adventures concepts and merge them into a game Rare was working on, Dinosaur Planet. >That’s right. Dinosaur Planet was also being made for N64 in the beginning, but it was fairly late in the N64’s life product cycle and people were already talking about Dolphin, and as we were asking ourselves whether to go ahead with our project internally, the staff were already being pulled away to work on big projects like Mario and Zelda, and so after work wrapped up on Majora’s Mask, the project was restructured. >>304741 My same sentiments on the matter. Dyack had a spiritual successor pitched on Kickstarter (back when everyone was doing that) that didn't meet its funding goal after one of his employees got busted on CP and the press picked up the story. Considering that Nintendo has no shortage of series in their back catalogue that eternally lie, I don't expect them to do it on their own. Especially as Eternal Darkness was modestly successful in the West and probably completely irrelevant to the Japanese market, which drives most of Nintendo's decision making.

It's more of a Japanese thing. Lots of Japanese houses are tiny and you need a tiny box in your room as to not take up much space. But yeah, it's pretty funny how they've kind of been aiming for the Switch ever since the Gamecube was released.
Why does Sunshine's surround mix sound like it came straight from an N64?

I have fond memories, but they were sadly cut short when my young sister kept biting on the discs. She thought they were donuts, and I was upset because she was too dumb to understand. The only thing that I've kept using without any issue was the Wavebird controller.

Wind Waker has like 25 really good model hacks. Play a well done Vaati or an excellent Malon. Items changed too. Something like that for Path of Radiance would be rad.

Our parents got us the Gamecube because it had four controller ports and there were four of us, but I don't think we ever really played any multiplayer games besides Double Dash. If we did, it was usually something that also came out on PS2 and thus only supported two players.
